Course Syllabus

1. TITLE OF COURSE: CSR1701 - Strategies/Internet Research
2. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to assist students in effectively researching information on the Internet by correctly defining the search topic, identifying and using the proper search tools, evaluating the search results, and refining the search if necessary.  Students should have some knowledge of the Internet. 
3. PROGRAM AND/OR DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT: The CIS Program will provide superior learning opportunities in the area of information technology, utilizing state-of-the-art technology, for both CIS majors and non CIS majors to enable all students to achieve their career and/or educational goals.
4. TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS:
   • Textbook selected when course is offered.
5. SCCC/ATS OUTCOMES: Students who successfully complete this course will demonstrate the ability to do the following SCCC/ATS Outcomes:
   • Outcome #1 – Read with comprehension, be critical of what they read, and apply knowledge gained to real life situations.
   • Outcome # 5 – Demonstrate the ability to think critically by gathering facts, generating insights, analyzing data, and evaluating information.
   • Outcome # 6 - Utilize current technology relevant to their respective disciplines.
   • Outcome #9 – Exhibit workplace skills that include respect for others, teamwork competence, attendance/punctuality, decision making, conflict resolution, truthfulness/honesty, positive attitude, judgment, and responsibility.
6. COURSE OUTCOMES: Upon completion of the Strategies of Internet Research course with 80% or higher mastery of course competencies, the student should be able to:
   • Demonstrate ability to effectively search the Internet
   • Demonstrate ability to construct in-depth Internet searches
   • Demonstrate ability to use specialized search engines and guides
   • Demonstrate understanding and usage of netiquette
   • Demonstrate ability to access periodical databases, government sources and other online reference sources
7. COURSE OUTLINE:
   • Searching the Internet Effectively
   • Constructing Deep Searches
   • Browsing Subject Guides
   • Finding Specialty Information
8. INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS:
   • Instructors will enforce the Academic Honor Code & Cheating Policy as set forth in the SCCC College Catalog.  Students who fail to adhere to this policy will receive an F for the course final grade unless otherwise stated in the instructor’s course policies.
9. INSTRUCTIONAL AND RESOURCE MATERIALS:
   • Periodicals dealing with Internet research as determined during course
   • Internet
10. METHODS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • SCCC/ATS Outcomes #1, 5, 6, and 9 will be assessed by a variety of assignments and projects.
